Oil & Fluids

Oil & Fluids

Ever wonder what’s under those yellow caps?

Your Subaru uses multiple fluids to help support its various systems and overall vehicle performance. Our factory trained technicians know all about them, and inspect these key fluids during the multi-point inspection. It’s important for you to keep an eye on them from time to time. It’s simple – just open your hood and look for the yellow caps. For detailed instructions, refer to your Owner’s Manual.

Engine Oil

When it’s time, an oil change is something you shouldn’t put off doing. That’s why our Service Center is conveniently open for you. Our technicians are factory trained and work on Subaru vehicles every day. Their training and experience ensures that the job will be done professionally – with Genuine Subaru Parts – in a timely fashion.

Between oil changes, Subaru recommends that you check the oil level on your dipstick at every other fuel stop. Depending on your driving style and other conditions, your engine may consume oil more frequently than the recommended oil change intervals. So check the level and top it off if it’s low. It’s good practice to check vehicle fluids to help ensure your Subaru performs safely. It’s easy and anyone can do it. View the videos above to see how you can check your vehicle’s fluid levels.

Radiator Fluid

Also called antifreeze coolant, radiator fluid's an important component of your vehicle's cooling system, taking the heat off your engine during operation. Over time, it can become contaminated or turn acidic. So, it's important to change it periodically, usually every 24,000 to 36,000 miles or 24 to 36 months. But your driving habits are also a factor, and they become especially so in locales with prolonged periods of sweltering temperatures. If you're a driver in such climates, check the fluid in your radiator every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or so to be sure.

Transmission Fluid

This liquid's paramount to smoothing gear shifts, both cooling your transmission's mechanisms and helping to lubricate its many moving parts. Check its levels around once a month using your vehicle's tank's dipstick. Fluid color can be an indicator of its condition -- bright red usually means it's okay to keep using, but darker, soiled, and/or burnt-smelling fluid requires a change. That's not to mention when it's simply at lower-than-required levels. Give your transmission fluid a flush and replenishment about every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

Power Steering Fluid

Steering-wheel turns should remain a seamless matter of course. That's the purpose of your car or truck's power steering fluid. Grit and other debris can clog rack-and-pinion seals and lead to wear on both your power steering's pump and gear, so if you notice diminished ease of steering, it might mean it's time for a fluid replacement. But flush schedules vary, from about every two years to every 75,000 to 100,000 miles, even as little as 30,000 to 60,000 miles. When to do so depends on the age and functionality of your vehicle.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid streamlines brake pedal activation, sending signals through your vehicle's closed hydraulic brake system via multiple components, ultimately leading to brake pad activation. It can naturally deplete over time, and deposits can accumulate, resulting in reduced stopping power. When to change brake fluid is a matter of debate. It can vary dramatically between automakers and according to drive-time conditions, so be sure to check your owner's manual's recommended factory maintenance schedule to be sure.
