Gas Mileage Tips

Cannon Subaru offers residents of Lakeland Florida tips to improve gas mileage!

The price of gas seems to just keep going up. This is causing drivers in the Lakeland, FL region to take a hard look at their driving habits in the hopes of improving gas mileage. Here are some of our most helpful tips to ensure you get the most miles out of your next tank of gas.

  • Clean your air filter. Keeping your air filter free of dirt and grime can improve your gas mileage by about 10%. It's always a good idea to check it for buildup and ensure it stays clean so your vehicle can work at its best capacity!
  • Get a tire alignment.  If your wheels aren't aligned correctly, your engine will have to work harder and your tires will wear out faster. Both of these things can reduce gas mileage, sometimes by as much as 10%!
  • Get a tune-up. A well-tuned engine not only runs better, but can also increase mileage by about 4%. We like the "tune" of that!
  • Make sure your tires are inflated. Did you know that twenty-five percent of all passenger vehicles currently being used have under-inflated tires? Check your tires regularly, since an under-inflation about 7.5 pounds can result in a 3% loss in fuel efficiency.
  • Keep an eye on your gas cap. Just about 17% of vehicles on the road have missing or broken gas caps, which can harm the environment and reduce gas mileage as well. Fixing or replacing a faulty gas cap will save you gas and money in the long run!
  • Lighten up! With every extra 100 pounds in your car, you lose about 1% of your fuel efficiency. Free up your trunk of anything you don't need and save the next time you fill up your tank!
  • Stop speeding! Love to speed on the highway? We know the feeling. But did you know that for every 5 miles per hour you reduce your speed on the highway, your fuel consumption is reduced by 7%? If you normally drive at 75 mph on the highway, lessening your speed to 70 mph will help you save gas and the cost of a speeding ticket.
  • Operate smoothly. Find yourself slamming on the brakes often? Operating smoother will help your gas mileage. The easier you accelerate and brake, the less you'll have to spend at the pump. You can save up to 33% of your gas by slowing down on the highway, and about 5% around town.
  • Don't keep braking. Keeping your foot on the brake while you drive will hurt your brakes, and cause you to use more gas. Reduce your gas consumption by up to 35% by braking less!
  • Idling isn't necessary. Need to idle your vehicle for over 30 seconds? Turn your car off instead of leaving it running. Doing so will save you gas and is the environmentally friendly thing to do!
